What does “kelo” mean?

Even though pines never grow tall in Lapland, they can live for hundreds of years. And when they die, they can remain standing still for years. As they drop their bark, they become solemn, silver-grey snag trees. Besides being pretty, these snags are home to many organisms – and thanks to being lightweight and durable, they are a sought-after material among cottage builders.

If you want to see snags and old pines in the wilderness, it is a good idea to head towards the Järvisen aihkikko area, approx. 45 km from the city centre. Järvinen was a forester, artist and outdoor literature author who spent a lot of time in his deadwood cabin in the aihkikko area.
