What does “kaltio” mean?
“Kaltio” is a word borrowed from the Sami language into Finnish, meaning a spring with clear water. In springs, groundwater bubbles up to the surface of the ground. In the old days, when wandering in the wilderness of Lapland, you hardly had to bring any drinking water with you, because springs producing clear water were to be found everywhere.
It is fascinating to watch water bubble forth from the bottom of a sand-bottomed spring. You can witness this at the Keisarinlähde spring along the nature trail of the Korkalovaara Hill, for example. You can also find other springs along other nature trails in Rovaniemi.
