What does “jää” mean?

In the autumn, you can hear a fragile jingling sound at the river shore, as translucently thin sheets of ice brought by the stream from the north hit each other when reaching the shore. As it gets even more freezing, the ice first cuts into the shore and then nearly bridges the entire river during the winter. The river ice creates additional space for moving around, skiing, and sledding in the city. In the old days, horse and reindeer races used to be held on the river ice as well

River Kemijoki is mostly covered by ice from December to April in Rovaniemi. If there is a stream, the river ice is fragile or the river stays completely open throughout the winter. As the ice melts in the spring, the river transports sturdy ice floes that are pushed onto the land by flood water. These floes can even take boats and docks with them. The ice is beautiful, brittle, strong. A true force of nature.
