Hanki – the Snowdrift

The spacious Hanki room is decorated in soft shades of white and grey. The bathtub next to the room’s sleeping area is like a hole in ice in a wintry landscape, only much more comfortable. This “ice hole” is suitable for long-term relaxation, and it is conveniently close to the bed’s warmth. The room can also accommodate the entire family: In addition to the king-size bed, the sofa in the living area can be used as a bed for two.
In late winter, the sun warms the day, but the freezing temperatures drop well below zero at night. This forms a layer of ice on the surface of the snowdrift. This layer can support the weight of skiers and even walkers, until the sun’s warmth softens the surface through the course of the day. It is the time of snow crust. Many think that this is the best time of the year to spend in Lapland.
In the old times, the snow crust made it easier to move from one place to another. Late winter was the best time to bring the furs, that had been hunted during the winter, and other bounty from the wilderness to be sold in the town, and to buy supplies that were not available in remote areas. A spring fair is held in Rovaniemi even nowadays in March, usually coinciding with the best snow crust days of the winter.
